Types of Back Pain We Treat

Sciatica

Shooting pain down leg, numbness, tingling

Herniated Discs

Bulging or ruptured discs pressing on nerves

Chronic Pain

Back pain lasting months or years

Muscle Spasms

Severe muscle tightness and pain

Additional conditions: Degenerative disc disease, facet joint pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, spinal stenosis, failed back surgery syndrome.

Why Pain Becomes Chronic

Back pain becomes chronic when underlying causes aren't addressed:

Disc Degeneration

Damaged discs don't heal on their own. Without proper treatment, degeneration continues.

Nerve Compression

Herniated discs or bone spurs compress nerves, causing pain down legs (sciatica).

Muscle Compensation

Chronic spasm and weakness develop as muscles try to protect injured areas.

Our Comprehensive Treatment Approach

1. Thorough Evaluation

Identify root causes through examination, history, and imaging review. Not just symptom management.

2. Spinal Decompression

For herniated discs and sciatica, computerized decompression relieves nerve pressure without surgery. Learn more →

3. Chiropractic Adjustments

Restore proper spinal mechanics, reduce nerve irritation, improve function.

4. Advanced Soft Tissue Therapy

Release muscle tension, break up scar tissue, restore normal tissue function. Graston certified.

5. Corrective Rehabilitation

Strengthen core, correct movement patterns, prevent recurrence.

What to Expect

Acute back pain: Recent injuries often respond quickly, with significant relief in 4-6 weeks.

Chronic back pain: Long-standing problems typically require 8-12 weeks for substantial improvement. We focus on functional improvement and pain reduction.

Realistic goals: Complete pain elimination isn't always possible with chronic conditions, but most patients achieve 30-85% improvement and return to normal activities.

Red Flags - Seek Immediate Medical Care

Go to ER if you experience:

  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Progressive leg weakness
  • Saddle numbness (numbness in groin/inner thigh area)
  • Severe trauma (fall, accident)
  • Fever with back pain

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does back pain treatment take?

It depends on how long you have had the problem. Recent injuries often respond significantly within 4 to 6 weeks. Chronic back pain that has been present for months or years typically requires 8 to 12 weeks for substantial improvement. Dr. Hamling will give you a realistic timeline at your first visit based on your specific condition.

Do I need a referral to see you for back pain?

No. You do not need a referral from your primary care physician. You can call our office directly at (320) 585-7246 to schedule your $79 assessment. If you have imaging such as X-rays or MRI from another provider, bring those along and we will review them at no extra charge.

What does the $79 back pain assessment include?

The assessment includes a thorough examination, review of your medical history and any existing imaging, orthopedic and neurological testing to identify the source of your pain, and a consultation with Dr. Hamling. You will leave knowing exactly what is causing your back pain and whether our treatment approach is appropriate for your situation.

Can you help if physical therapy did not work for me?

Yes. We regularly treat patients who tried physical therapy, injections, or medication without lasting relief. Our approach combines chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression for disc-related problems, and advanced soft tissue therapy. These address the underlying structural issues that physical therapy alone may not resolve.

Do you treat sciatica?

Yes. Sciatica — pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the lower back down the leg — is one of the most common conditions we treat. It is usually caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis compressing the sciatic nerve. Spinal decompression therapy is particularly effective for this type of nerve compression.

Will I need X-rays or an MRI?

Not always. If you already have recent imaging, bring it and we will review it. If we need additional imaging to make an accurate diagnosis, we can order it. We do not require unnecessary imaging — the clinical examination often tells us what we need to know.

How far do patients travel for back pain treatment in Morris?

Patients drive from across west central Minnesota including Alexandria (45 minutes), Willmar (60 minutes), Fergus Falls (70 minutes), St. Cloud (90 minutes), and Brainerd (2 hours). They make the drive because our combination of chiropractic care and spinal decompression therapy is not widely available in this region.

What is the difference between your approach and a regular chiropractor?

Many chiropractors offer adjustments only. Our clinic combines chiropractic adjustments with computerized spinal decompression for disc-related problems, advanced soft tissue therapy including Graston technique, and corrective rehabilitation. This multimodal approach addresses the structural, neurological, and muscular components of back pain rather than treating one piece in isolation.
