What is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) occurs when the shoulder capsule thickens and tightens, severely limiting movement. It typically progresses through three stages:
Stage 1: Freezing (2-9 months)
Gradual onset of pain and stiffness. Range of motion begins to decrease.
Stage 2: Frozen (4-12 months)
Pain may improve, but stiffness worsens. Significant limitation in movement.
Stage 3: Thawing (12-42 months)
Gradual improvement in range of motion—but full recovery can take years without treatment.
Common Symptoms
Limited Range
Can't raise arm overhead or behind back
Shoulder Pain
Especially at night, interferes with sleep
Stiffness
Shoulder feels "locked" or "stuck"
Daily Limits
Can't dress, wash hair, reach for items
Why Traditional Treatment Often Fails
Standard physical therapy focuses on stretching—but aggressive stretching can worsen inflammation and prolong the condition.
Cortisone injections may reduce pain temporarily but don't address the underlying capsular adhesions.
Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) forcefully breaks adhesions while you're sedated—but carries risks including fracture, nerve damage, and re-injury.
Our Approach: Gentle, Progressive Restoration
Advanced Laser Technology
We use Class IV laser therapy to reduce inflammation and promote tissue healing in the shoulder capsule.
Precise Manual Therapy
Gentle, targeted mobilization techniques to gradually restore range of motion without aggravating inflammation.
Customized Home Program
Specific exercises to maintain and improve mobility between visits.
What to Expect
Timeline: Most patients see noticeable improvement within 4-8 weeks, with continued progress over 3-6 months.
Results: Most patients achieve 30-85% improvement in range of motion from starting point.
What causes frozen shoulder?
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) happens when the tissue surrounding your shoulder joint thickens and tightens. It often develops after an injury, surgery, or period of immobility — but sometimes there is no clear cause. Diabetes, thyroid conditions, and hormonal changes also increase risk.
How is your treatment different from physical therapy?
Standard physical therapy focuses heavily on stretching, which can actually worsen inflammation in a frozen shoulder. Our approach uses Class IV laser therapy to reduce inflammation first, then combines precise manual mobilization techniques to gradually restore range of motion without aggravating the joint. We treat the inflammation and the adhesions — not just the stiffness.
Will treatment involve cracking or popping my shoulder?
No. Our frozen shoulder protocol does not involve high-velocity adjustments to the shoulder joint. Treatment is gentle, progressive, and designed to work within your comfort level at every visit.
How long does treatment take?
Most patients notice meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 weeks. Full restoration of range of motion typically takes 3 to 6 months depending on which stage your frozen shoulder is in when you start treatment. The earlier you begin, the faster you recover.
Do I need to live in Morris to be a patient?
Not at all. Many of our shoulder patients drive from Alexandria (45 min), Fergus Falls (1 hr), Willmar (1 hr), St. Cloud (1 hr 15 min), and Brainerd (1 hr 30 min). Herb T. drives over 75 miles each way from Richmond because the results are worth the trip.
What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit is a comprehensive shoulder assessment. Dr. Hamling or Dr. Wolner will evaluate your range of motion, identify which stage of frozen shoulder you are in, and determine whether our program is the right fit. Both doctors hold Frozen Shoulder Treatment Certifications. You will receive your first treatment that same day. The entire visit takes about 60 minutes. Cost is just $79.
Is this program right for everyone with shoulder pain?
No. We are selective about who we accept. If your shoulder pain is caused by a full-thickness rotator cuff tear, fracture, or tumor, our program is not appropriate. We will tell you honestly at your assessment whether we can help — and if we cannot, we will refer you to the right provider.
Can frozen shoulder heal on its own?
Technically yes — but the natural course of frozen shoulder can take 18 months to 3 years, and many patients never regain full range of motion without treatment. Our program accelerates that timeline significantly and helps restore mobility that waiting alone often does not.
Do you accept insurance?
We work with most major insurance plans. Call our office at (320) 585-7246 and we will verify your benefits before your first visit so there are no surprises.
